The undersigned European Medical Organisations believe that each European patient deserves and has the right to receive care of adequate standards, particularly in times of economic hardship and distress, and that inequality in access to healthcare has to be reduced. The tendency to reduce health expenditure only in order to maintain fiscal stability as seen in some countries is unacceptable.
The undersigned European Medical Organisations call upon European and national institutions to assure that every European patient receives the best possible healthcare and that the availability of healthcare professionals, hospital beds and healthcare structures, access to adequate technology and to medical services without undue delays are not allowed to deteriorate.

European Medical Organisations strongly support the considerable work that has been, and continues to be performed by medical experts in healthcare in developing medical standards and guidelines for practice based on their clinical experience and research findings.
Accordingly, these Medical Organisations have profound concerns about the attempts by the European Committee on Standardisation (CEN - Centre Européen de Normalisation) to introduce standards based on quality management systems that do not have a solid evidence-base within the clinical environment of healthcare systems.

We also look forward to the early introduction and implementation of a new Tobacco Products Directive, which discourages smoking and the use of tobacco products through new and effective measures that truly reduce consumption. Our collective objective must be the significant reduction of adverse health effects of smoking on millions of European citizens. We believe this Directive should be given the highest priority on the EU agenda.
